ThinkersBox specialises in cognitive development for children aged 5 to 12 years old. The company first started in 2006 where they conducted cognitive training classes at Singapore Polytechnic. In 2007 they expanded their clients by working together with Unity Primary School and conducting trainings for students living in lower-income household. In 2010, ThinkersBox was formally established and they moved to a center of their own. Till now, ThinkersBox conducts personalized cognitive training classes for children aged 5 to 12 years old during the weekends while working with other Montessori education centers and primary schools during the weekdays. The weekend classes are more targeted at parents of children who are more well-to-do financially as the classes can be considered quite costly. The weekday classes on the other hand are less intensive and as the company works with schools, the cost is lower so that the company can reach out to children living in lower-income household who needs help to improve their cognitive development. Currently, ThinkersBox are in the midst of expanding their business overseas. They have recently worked with a partner in Thailand to open a center there and they are currently in talks with partners in India. Satire, Humor, and Shock Value in Swifts A Modest Proposal Swifts message to the English government in A Modest Proposal deals with the disgusting state of the English-Irish common people. Swift, as the narrator expresses pity for the poor and oppressed, while maintaining his social status far above them. The poor and oppressed that he refers to are Catholics, peasants, and the poor homeless men, women, and children of the kingdom. This is what Swift is trying to make the English government, in particular the Parliament aware of; the great socioeconomic distance between the increasing number of peasants and the aristocracy, and the effects thereof. Swift estimates that there are 120,000 children of poor parents born annually. These children are a burden on society because . . .we can neither employ them in handicraft or agriculture (2183), they have no practical skills or uses. To deal with this problem, Swift makes his modest proposal, using a device that is timeless in its effectiveness-shock value: [A] healthy child well nursed is at a year old a most delicious nourishing, and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked or boiled; and I make no doubt that it will equally serve in a fricassee or a ragout. (2182) Indeed the proposal to eat the poor is a shocking statement, but what adds to the shock value is the delivery. For example, take the last statement regarding a fricassee. This statement is not necessary for the point, but it certainly adds to the appalling nature of the quote. The sarcastic nature puts Swift so far above the poor subjects that it evokes an extremely humorous response. Swift digresses and uses sarcasm numerous times in the essay, to emphasize truisms in a manner that tries to be less than direct, but has the ultimate effect of clarity. When I first heard that Bush was making a remix album I was not too excited. Who would want an album with the same old Bush songs with a disco beat in the background? Then for my birthday I received Deconstructed. I could not have been more wrong about the album. When I put the album into my stereo, the first song Everything Zen came blasting on. Because this is one of my favorite Bush songs I thought I could sing right along, but it did not sound like the original. I was shocked: it was not the same song put to a disco beat. Bush, with the help of several dance mix artists, had completely rewritten the songs. The next song was Mouth. This is probably the most familiar song on the album because it is on the soundtrack An American Werewolf in Paris. The album contains several familiar Bush songs but in a new light.
